When it comes to sublimation, pigment or dye-based, DTF (Direct-to-Film), DTG (Direct-to-Garment) or any type of inkjet printing, maintaining print quality is essential for daily operations. One extremely simple yet powerful maintenance step that often gets overlooked is the printer nozzle check.

What is a Printer Nozzle Check?

A nozzle check is a built-in printer function that prints a small test pattern to ensure that all ink nozzles are firing correctly. If your printer skips lines or prints faded areas, it’s a sign that your nozzles may be clogged or partially blocked.

Why Nozzle Checks Are Important

  • Prevents Clogged Printheads
Inkjet printers, especially those using sublimation, DTF, DTG, or pigment inks, are prone to nozzle clogging if not used regularly. Running a nozzle check helps catch early signs of clogging before they turn into bigger issues, that you may not be able to recover from.
  • Maintains Print Quality
If your nozzles are partially blocked, colors may print incorrectly, causing streaks, banding, or missing details in your designs. Regular checks ensure crisp, high-quality prints every time.
  • Saves Time & Ink
Ignoring a nozzle check can lead to excessive cleaning cycles, which use up more ink than necessary. Running a quick test before large print jobs can prevent unnecessary waste and keep your printer running efficiently.
  • Prevents Production Delays
A clogged printhead in the middle of a production job can be frustrating and costly. Performing routine nozzle checks helps prevent unexpected downtime and ensures smooth operations.

How Often Should You Run a Nozzle Check?

Daily – If you print frequently, running a quick nozzle check each morning can prevent future issues.

Weekly – If your printer is used occasionally, a weekly nozzle check is a good habit to keep everything running smoothly.

After Printer Downtime – If your printer has been idle for a few days, always run a nozzle check before starting a new project.

How to Perform a Nozzle Check

This process will vary by printer. Reviews your printer's owner's manual, or quickstep guide for step-by-step assistance.

  • Access the printer settings – Navigate to the maintenance or utilities section.
  • Select "Nozzle Check" – The printer will print a small test pattern.
  • Examine the printout – Look for missing lines or gaps in the pattern.
  • Perform a cleaning cycle if needed – If gaps appear, run a head cleaning cycle and test again. It could be possible that nozzles cannot be recovered, however, as an added step, select printer models have a powerful cleaning that you can choose to clear up blocked nozzles.

A simple nozzle check can be the difference between a flawless print job and a frustrating printing disaster.
