ChromaBlast Extreme Color Imaging System
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is chromablast?
Chromablast is a unique patented ink and media combination in that where the ink chemistry and the media coating chemistry touch there is a cross-link reaction under heat and pressure that chemically bonds the image to the cotton. The non-image area does physically transfer but washes away because the cross-link reaction isn't activated due to the lack of ink on the non-image area.

How does it work?
Simply install chromablast ink in your Epson C88, R1800 or 4800. Design your image and preview it in the chromablast driver, the proprietary software that is included with your inks, and hit print. When the chromablast media is done printing use a heat press to fix the image to the shirt. Fast, affordable and totally customizable!

What is the cost?
Cost is $2.00 to $2.50 for an 8-1/2" x 11" image. Remember… this is a digital imaging system. This estimated image cost includes the chromablast media and the chromablast ink. The chromablast software driver is included with the system.

How to buy the product?
chromablast inks are available for the Epson C88, R1800 and 4800 printers in convenient and clean CMYK cartridges. The chromablast medium is available in two sizes: 8-1/2" x 11" (100 sheets per pack) and 11" x 17" (100 sheets per pack).

What type of heat press is required?
For optimum color and wash fastness, Sawgrass recommends a pneumatic heat press application at 375 degrees F / 25 seconds / 60 psi. A standard heat press may be used at 375 degrees F / 40 seconds.

What is so unique about this product?
The key to the chromablast digital imaging system is the chemical bonding between the ink and the coating on the media. The areas where the inks and media are touching create a unique chemistry that has a very strong affinity to cotton. When the printer image is applied to the t-shirt with heat, the printed area literally cross links into the cotton molecules. This crosslink is very strong bond and create a nearly permanent bond. Remove the paper and the image area is tattooed into the shirt itself. The area around the image has a very light feel that becomes nearly invisible after one wash. The result is a vibrant colorful image on the garment that looks, feels and breathes like nothing else in the market. Imagine giving your customers the ability to print what they need, when they need it. Now imagine all of this from the digital desktop printing system that uses dry, clean inks and can be operated right in their facility, office or virtually anywhere by their graphic design or marketing staff.

How does chromablast compare to screen printing and transfer paper?
Plastisol is the key component of screen printing. Plastisol does not react with the fibers, but sticks on the surface of the garment, creating a heavy, non-breathable image which can crack and peel. Traditional transfer paper utilizes a thermoplastic which has a result similar to screen printing.

The chemistry behind the chromablast digital imaging system consists of active ingredients that react and cross link to the garment fibers when heat is applied. Because the image and garment fibers bond, chromablast has a softer hand and superior wash fastness.

How does this compare to Natura?
chromablast can be viewed as the next generation to Natura. Instead of printing the clear toner, the chemistry is incorporated onto the coating of the chromablast media.

How does this compare to NaturaLink?
chromablast is an affordable system for those looking to enter the digital decorating business, or supplement their high volume capability with additional capabilities and lower volume options for smaller orders. The chromablast system does not require a flatbed printer so the initial cost of entry is substantially lower.

The MS One fueled by NaturaLink is a higher volume system solution for those who want a high quality / lower cost image. Images made using NaturaLink start brighter and stay brighter than other direct to garment inks.
